A Global Effort Against Credit Card Fraud

Within the payment industry, there is one phrase that can send chills down a merchant's spine like no other...credit card fraud.  There are a lot of questions surrounding the issue:
  • How can I spot a skimmer?
  • What can I do to decrease my risk of being targeted?
  • How do I prevent it?
  • Can I prevent it?
Unfortunately, the answers to these questions aren't entirely straight-forward...the issue is likely much more complicated than most individuals realize.  A good portion of credit card fraud/skimming has ties to gang activity with unauthorized credit card information reaching the hands of criminals as far away as Eastern Europe.  I don't say this in order to scare anyone, but rather to inform and make known this illegal activity.

The GOOD NEWS: new innovations in credit card technology and the efforts of some dedicated individuals are making your payments safer every day.  As explained in an article by Steve Ragan in the Tech Herald, people such as Tom Patterson, current CSO of Magtek and a former FBI advisor on cyber security, are working on the use magnetic fingerprint technology to stop these con artists in their tracks.  He and others are working on using proven technology to combat credit card fraud and its ties to global organized crime.

As far as what you can do on a micro level, make sure that your business stays up with the latest PCI compliance standards.  If you accept credit cards, you need to use a payment processor, such as North American Bancard, that is dedicated to helping your business stay secure.  Keep a close watch on all transaction activity and stay informed.  You can drastically decrease your risk of being targeted by following these precautions.
